Canon introduces Selphy ES40 with voice guidance system

Canon has announced that it will be releasing a new portable photo printer, dubbed the Selphy ES40, in October.

The five-pound printer comes with a carrying handle along the top, a 3-and-a-half inch LCD, a scroll wheel, and the ability to print photos right from a digital camera, over Bluetooth, or though a memory card reader that supports SD, Compact Flash, and Memory Sticks.

The most interesting feature about this portable printer, though, is that the ES40 talks to the user with a voice guidance system, which gives step-by-step instructions for printing and adding graphics to images.

In addition to the voice capabilities, the ES40 also comes with a series of photo editing features, picture frame options, and clip art.

Blackberry users have new mobile print application service

PlanOn, a provider of portable scanning and printing solutions, has announced the PlanOn Mobile Enhanced Print Application for Blackberry, a new Software as a Service (SaaS) based print server application for the Bluetooth-enabled Blackberry smartphone line.

The new service allows smartphone users to print web pages and virtually any email attachments, including documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, presentations, photos and images, directly through the Blackberry from anywhere, anytime, using the PlanOn PrintStik mobile printer.

Canon has announced its Pixma iP100 portable printer, offering a photo-capable resolution of 9,600 by 1,200 dpi in a unit measuring just 12 inches across and weighing a little over 4 pounds.

The iP100 is marketed toward for the travelling professional who needs to produce high quality color documents while on the road (such as a presentation) and to consumers who want to be able to print snapshots during a vacation.

The iP100 can handle 14 pages per minute in color and 20 pages per minute in black-and-white, and boasts USB 2.0 and a PictBridge port for printing images directly off a PictBridge-compatible camera.

The unit will print borderless prints ranging from 4 × 6 inches all the way up to letter size, and ab optional IrDA port allows for wireless printing. The iP100 will also be available with an optional Bluetooth adapter for wireless printing from Bluetooth devices (cell phones, cameras, etc.).

Thermal vs. Ink Jet

One of the major considerations to make when purchasing a portable printer is that of thermal vs. ink jet. We might as well be asking you to choose between the Yankees and the Red Sox, right? People really do get just as worked up by the printing technology as they do over their sports teams. But we digress - and instead provide a quick guide for the uninitiated.

Thermal
Thermal printers can work one of two ways - they can operate like an 80's fax machine, using heat-sensitive paper, which is marked with a small heating device. The other way they can work is via thermal transfer. These printers work a lot like a typewriter, using heat and pressure to transfer images from a ribbon to the page.

Ink Jet
Ink jet portable printers function very much like your desktop ink jet printer - small cartridges of liquid ink, spray very fine drops through a nozzle to create images.

The tradeoffs?
Thermal and thermal transfer printers hold their advantage in weight - they can be very small. The smallest thermal printer weighs only about 15 ounces, while the smallest thermal transfer printer weighs just about a pounds. In contrast, ink-jet printers start at about 2.5 pounds.

But on the other side of the coin, ink jet printers generally produce much better output than thermal transfer and thermal models. Ink jets can produce fairly good images, especially if very smooth paper is used. Thermal transfer printers can often leave horizontal bands on dark areas, and of course thermal printers require a special type of paper.

Polaroid goes back to the beginning

Once well known for their cameras that would instantly spit out a print, Polaroid brings that concept back, with a modern twist - portable printers for images from cellphones and digital cameras.

Just like the cutting-edge technology used by their original cameras in the 1960s, the new arrivals from Polaroid will make use of a new invention, thermal ink.

The thermal ink, technology provided by startup company Zink Imaging, allows the printers to turn out 2" x 3" pictures that cost roughly 40 cents a piece.

The printers, which will retail for around $150, will connect via USB or Bluetooth technology, and will be available in the United States later this fall.
